Andreea Cojocaru is Romanian born and currently based in Antwerp, Belgium. She studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, graduating from the Jewellery Design Gold- and Silversmithing Department.
Fundamental to Cojocaru’s work is the idea of value and where it is attributed. Essentially, preciousness is not only found in materiality but in craftsmanship and labour too. ‘Made in Belgium by a Romanian’ comments on the conditions under which products are manufactured and importantly, the fair compensation of labour.
This emphasis on craftsmanship has lead Cojocaru to explore the use of absence and excess. Crucial parts of her jewellery pieces often appear to be missing, revealing our observations to what signs of making, or the maker, are noticeable to us.
Cojocaru’s work takes aspects of what is familiar to write a new visual story, utilising the weight of value and the relationship jewellery has to the body to reinterpret a classic approach.
