BECOMING-WITH
We discuss human surface, its significance and its potential, seen as a site of contestation between mythology, biology and technology. Loan Favan’s artistic practice oscillates within this triangle. She looks at body modifications and scarification rituals within a range of cultures in Oceania, including Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and her native New Caledonia. Constantly connecting mythology to contemporary society, she looks ahead into deep future, speculating on how the rituals and rites of passage could transform future humans with the help of biological and technological modifications. Her work creates a vast world of multi-species symbiosis, where human surface morphs to accommodate new features necessary to survive and to thrive in the future. We examine possible connections between her work and the historic pieces in the Wereldmuseum’s collection.
- Contributor Loan Favan, a jewellery designer and artist from New Caledonia. She is the founder of Naula_studio and pays homage to Pacific traditions through the medium of jewellery. Drawing inspiration from her home island, she transcends conventional jewellery, shaping intricate 'artifacts' that encapsulate the spirits and mystical powers of her island. As an independent jewellery artist, Loan seeks to share stories and traditions through her designs, designing both statement art pieces as well as wearables pieces.
- Contributor Dr. Fanny Wonu Veys, Curator Oceania at the Wereldmuseum and professor by special appointment ‘Arts and Material Culture of Oceania’ at Leiden University. Her topics of interest and expertise include Pacific art and material culture, museums and cultures of collecting, Pacific musical instruments, Pacific textiles, gender and material culture, missionary collections, and the significance of historical objects in a contemporary setting. Her fieldwork sites include New Zealand (since 2000), Tonga (since 2003) and Arnhem Land, Australia (since 2014). She is the main editor of the Provenance series published by the Wereldmuseum and is the president of the Pacific Arts Association Europe.
