PULSE BY PETER DECKERS

Munich Jewellery Week 2025

For this year’s Pulse selections, we approached a number of MJW attendees from Aotearoa and friends from further afield – some who are visiting Munich for the first time, others who are seasoned pros. For everyone connected to contemporary jewellery in Aotearoa, Munich is something we keenly look forward to and this year is very special with the amount of kiwi activity happening! These makers, curators, gallerists and educators have selected a phenomenal line up of what’s not to be missed. This time, we asked contemporary jewellery artist and craftsperson, Peter Deckers, to share his personal picks for the upcoming MJW!

Peter Deckers, born in the Netherlands and now residing in Aotearoa, New Zealand, creates distinctive jewellery that explores value, perception and the environment. He founded MAKERS 101 (M101) and led significant projects such as the HANDSHAKE project, which has inspired the international careers of many emerging art jewellers, and the Aotearoa Jewellery Triennial exhibitions. Passionate about arts education, Peter supports the creative community through mentoring and development programmes. His work is widely exhibited and published.

A Hologram of a Diamond

Solo exhibition by Moniek Schrijer Museum Mineralogia München

Entrance: Marianne-von-Werefkin-Weg,
Theresienstraße 39

Peter Deckers: I am very interested in this exhibition. I had the opportunity to see it in its entirety in Wellington, New Zealand, and it was the highlight of my year. I am curious to see how a smaller version of her impressive installation will work in a museum setting. Moniek has demonstrated exceptional talent since her studies and has continued to improve and impress ever since.

Hook Hand Heart Star: Warwick Freeman

Co-curated by Die Neue Sammlung and Objectspace (Auckland NZ)

Die Neue Sammlung, Barer Str. 40

PD: Warwick is undoubtedly one of the greatest jewellers in the world. All his work carries an iconic presence that resonates deeply and transcends the materials used. The reason there are so many New Zealand jewellery events in Munich 2025 is simply to support him and have a party!

Modern Times

Group international exhibition featuring Vanessa Arthur

Galerie Door guest of SMUDAJESCHECK GALERIE

Augustenstr. 48

PD: Gallery Door is a new addition to the jewellery art scene. I really enjoyed her exhibitions at the last two Schmuck events. She represents several Kiwi artists, and this year there is a feature presentation from Vanessa Arthur. Vanessa’s work always surprises me with her distinctive style and use of colour. I am eager to see her new pieces, as she is truly a talent to watch.

UNREAL, Dialogue Collective

Participants: Isabelle Busnel, Maarit Liukkonen, Petra Bishai, Pinah, Sam Wall, Sorca, Velvet Hart, Victoria King

Location: Plantologie Amalienstraße 87

PD: Dialogue Collective presents an exhibition that delves into the unreal, highlighting the idea that not everything that glitters is gold. This intense focus on the imaginary addresses themes of myth, mystery, and material reality. In today’s world, ‘real’ can encompass a multitude of interpretations. Is anything truly real anymore, or is it all just smoke and mirrors?

Since 2014, I have enjoyed the quirky ideas from Dialogue Collective, which seem to revolve around key members like Tim Carson and Petra Bishai. Jewellery is the meaning, but not the cause. Each year, they surprise their audience!
