PULSE BY ZOE BLACK & VICTORIA MCADAM

Munich Jewellery Week 2025

For this year’s Pulse selections, we approached a number of MJW attendees from Aotearoa and friends from further afield – some who are visiting Munich for the first time, others who are seasoned pros. For everyone connected to contemporary jewellery in Aotearoa, Munich is something we keenly look forward to and this year is very special with the amount of kiwi activity happening! These makers, curators, gallerists and educators have selected a phenomenal line up of what’s not to be missed. We asked the editors of MJW Paper 2025 – Zoe Black & Victoria McAdam – to share their personal picks for the upcoming MJW!

Zoe Black (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Hine, Pākehā) is the Deputy Director of Objectspace. She works across curatorial programming, community and international development, and programme delivery. Black’s curatorial practice centres community development and advocating for critically under-represented making and object art forms.

Victoria McAdam is Head of Communications and Partnerships at Objectspace. Her interest is in connecting audiences and resource with creative practice and supporting discourse around material culture and built environments. She has worked with and written for galleries, publishers, and artist-run initiatives across Aotearoa New Zealand.

KOHĀ Kōrero at MJW Social Club

Lost Weekend, Schellingstraße 3, Munich

ZB & VA: Of course we have to plug the KOHĀ Social Club on at MJW Headquarters on Saturday morning. Superstars Neke Moa, Stevei Houkāmau and Sofia Tekela-Smith have such an incredible perspective on making and will be sharing wisdom bombs and their fierce approach to practice. If you miss the KOHĀ ceremony on Wednesday afternoon, you will want to be at this event. Victoria will be in conversation with the trio, from 10.00 AM.

Schmuck Awards Presentation

Saturday afternoon, Messe München, Am Messesee 2, 81829 Munich

ZB & VA: Neke Moa was a winner of the Herbert Hofmann Prize in 2023 and we can’t wait to see who the winners are this year. There’s a few jewellers from Aotearoa in the mix and we will be hoping for one of them to take out this prestigious accolade.

Familiar in the Foreign – Jewellery from the Southern Hemisphere

Galerie Handwerk, Max-Joseph-Straße 4

ZB & VA: This extensive exhibition features so many jewellery heroes from Aotearoa and Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa, the Pacific. We are excited to see what curator Karl Chitham has selected for the exhibition, and all the jewellery the crowd will be wearing at the opening – it will no doubt be almost as good as the display!

Karl Fritsch & Liesbeth den Besten in conversation at the Englewirt Hotel

Sunday 16 March

ZB & VA: After all the chaos and inspiration of MJW, we are looking forward to finishing the week hearing from Karl Fritsch and Liesbeth den Besten. Both MJW stalwarts, they will undoubtly be sharing insightful reflections on the festivities, alongside a deep-dive into Karl’s practice and the many (!) shows he is participating in this year.
