Emerging craftsperson Sabira Silcock presents her MA collection of tactile jewellery objects. Inspired by the intimate relationship we have with our digital devices, Sabira created this series of objects which are designed to be handled as an alternative to the cold glass surface of the smartphone.
The series of interactive handles explore ways of connecting us to our surroundings by evoking the desire to touch and engage in a playful way. The door handle is usually our first point of contact with the building; Sabira uses this location to celebrate everyday encounters with object and material.
Layers of tactile material are applied to these ceramic forms, such as flock and industrial rubber coating to create engaging surfaces. Sabira also borrows techniques from her jewellery background to create oversized settings in the brass attachments, framing these moments of interaction with the objects.
After debuting the collection, Can you Handle this? at Konstfack University, Stockholm in May 2018, Sabira is now based in at Manchester Craft & Design Centre.
