With the JNGLSNTMSSV project, my aim is to combine everything that I have learned during the 3 years of my BA with a topic that is very relevant and close to my heart at this moment in time and explore ethics, sustainability and activism in fashion jewellery.
Firstly, as a designer and maker in a world where unsustainable production methods and overconsumption are massive problems, I find it very important to make sure that none of my actions contribute towards these issues. Additionally, what’s even better, is if the products can ‘speak for themselves’ to help raise awareness about all of the issues and evoke a discussion. Therefore, with my final collection, I aimed to do both of the aforementioned. So, all of the materials used are sourced as sustainably as possible and a lot of them, like the seatbelts, helmets and Swarovski crystals are upcycled. Furthermore, all of the pieces with tagua nuts as one of the materials are designed to use up all of the scrap material as well.
By combining all above with bold colours and very straight-forward symbols and messages, my hope is to show that sustainable fashion and jewellery can be bold, current and carry a strong message as opposed to the common misconception of it always looking a certain way or being ‘beige and boring’.
