Maja Michaelsdotter is a textile artist who works within the sculptural eld.
Her pieces are colourful and often portray everyday objects. A cat, an egg, a placenta. Through the work she bring up themes from ordinary life, but by playing with scale and setting the objects present a contrasting layer of meaning and an often comical or absurd aspect of the world. Michaelsdotter seeks to portray a striking fascination for everything living, our biological bodies and organs of flesh and blood as well as underlying themes of the mind. Her pieces often relate to topics viewed as heavy or problematic, which in my work is shown with an honesty that ultimately celebrates the force of life.
Stekt ägg nr 15/Fried egg no 15
The Fried Eggs is the only piece I produce in multiples, though each one remains unique, with its own variations in shape and size. Each egg is hand-tufted in wool and linen—materials that are naturally self-cleaning and dirt-repellent. The tufting is supported by a polyester backing and mounted on MDF for easy wall installation, and each piece comes with a brass title plate.
Using tufting—a semi-industrial technique traditionally used for rugs and carpets—I translate the method into sculptural objects and wall hangings. The piece can be vacuumed or gently refreshed by brushing it with clean, damp hands. It also functions as an excellent sound absorber.
